HISTORY OF
FOUR CORNERS OF FAITH

As we look into the history of the churches which make up
Four Corners of Faith,
we find any number of instances of overlap through the years.

BEATTYSTOWN

The Beattystown Presbyterian Church began in 1832 as a Sunday
School mission field of the First Presbyterian Church in
Hackettstown.  The cornerstone of the church, which is currently
located on Route 57, just south of Airport Road in the community of
Beattystown, was laid in 1882.  In 1887, the Beattystown church
united with the Second Mansfield Presbyterian Church of Rockport
(today known as Rockport Presbyteriain Church), in supplying a
pastor, an agreement which lasted until 1940.

PLEASANT GROVE

The Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church was founded in 1790, and
in 1808, united with the Presbyterian Church in Hackettstown in
supplying a pastor, an agreement which lated until 1832.  In the
early 1860's, the same pastor supplied both Pleasant Grove and the
Second Mansfield Presbyterian Church of Rockport (today known as
Rockport Presbyterian Church).  In 1875 the Schooley's Mountain
Presbyterian Church was chartered, with several members from
Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church.  And then in 1921, a joint call
was issued for a pastor to serve both Pleasant Grove and
Schooley's Mountain, an agreement which lasted through a number
of different pastors, until 1989.

ROCKPORT

The Rockport Presbyterian Church was built in 1855
as the Second Mansfield Presbyterian Church.  In
1887, the Newton Presbytery requested that the
Second Mansfield Presbyterian Church and the
Beattystown Presbyterian Church unite for the
purpose of sharing a pastor.  Second Mansfield had
services in the morning, and Beattystown had
services in the afternoon.  This agreement lasted
nearly 60 years, ending in 1940.  In 1959, the
church's name was changed from The Second
Mansfield Presbyterian Church to Rockport
Presbyterian Church.

SCHOOLEY'S MOUNTAIN

Schooley's Mountain Presbyterian Church had its
beginnings as a Union Evangelical Church, in a
summer resort community, in 1825.  By 1870, the
original stone chapel became unfit for use, and the
present church building was built and dedicated in
1870.  In 1875 the Schooley's Mountain Presbyterian
Church was organized and chartered by the
Presbytery of Morris and Orange, with several of its
members from the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian
Church.  In 1921, a joint call was issued for a pastor to
serve both Pleasant Grove and Schooley's Mountain,
an agreement which lasted through a number of
different pastors, until 1989.  Schooley's Mountain, at
one time, was also yoked with the Beattystown church.
